Wedged between Memphis and Indianapolis, Denver placed near the middle of the country's biggest cities in terms of driving safety in Allstate's Best Drivers survey. Denver drivers are statistically likely to go 10.2 years between car accidents, slightly better than the 9.8 years the insurance company estimated in 2004.

The country's safest drivers are found in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The city has finished first in the studies four years in a row. Allstate reports that Sioux Falls' drivers are 26.1 percent less likely than the U.S. average to be in a collision. They average a collision every 13.5 years.

Fort Collins, Colorado, finished second in the rankings. Drivers there are 24.6 percent less likely to be in accidents and on average go 13.3 years between collisions. Colorado Springs ranks tenth nationally, with drivers 15 percent less likely to experience a crash; the city's drivers average 11.8 years between accidents.

At the other end of the safety spectrum is Washington, D.C., where drivers are 95.4 percent more likely to be involved in a crash, and go only 5.1 years between incidents. Nearby Baltimore, Maryland, is only slightly better. Residents there go 5.6 years between collisions and are 80.1 percent more likely than average U.S. drivers to be in a crash.

Aurora, Colorado, finished slightly behind Denver in the rankings, with drivers 2.4 percent more likely than average to experience a crash. Aurora drivers have 9.8 years between accidents.
